Stock Picking Strategies for Discerning Investors:

As long as the stock market exists, there must always be the bullish and the bearish trends in the market place. These are the two components that make up the stock market. What this implies is that for every single day that the stock market opens, there are people making money, and there are people who are equally loosing money at the same time depending on the direction of the market. As a discerning investor, you need to arm yourself with the strategies that are geared towards securing your investments and also ensuring that you profit from the market daily, regardless of the period on the floor, whether bull or bear. So in order to achieve this, your stock picking strategies and principles has an important role to play here.

The first principle a wise investor should adopt for success, is to go for value investing. This is one of the best known stock picking strategies. How do you go about this? Simply look for the stocks that are selling at a bargain price, but have strong fundamentals, which include the company’s earnings, dividends, cash flow, and book value. These are companies that are undervalued by the market, but are sure to soar immediately the market corrects itself, which is certain that it will do. It is important to note here that not all prices that are down that are cheap. So a value investor will know how to do his due diligence before arriving at the conclusion that a particular stock is cheap or not. Price does not always determine whether a stock is cheap or not, the determinant factor is the fundamentals. E.g., if a company’s share price suddenly drops from $20 to $5, it does not mean that the price is cheap at that $5, rather, a value investor will first of all find out why the price nose-dived. Is it as a result of over-pricing which the market is now correcting? Or is it as a result of some fundamental problems? Or just because of profit taking and other market forces which does not affect the company’s fundamentals? These are the questions that a value investor must find answers to before investing his cash. The value investor knows that profits are made not just by trading of shares; rather, profits are made in stocks by investing in quality companies with strong fundamentals.

If you really want to make money in stocks, you have to sit down first, and ask yourself the type of investor you want to be. Ask yourself whether you are just trading in shares or whether you are investing for value. Don’t follow the herd. Do your due diligence before investing. The internet has made things so easy today that you will get any information you need at your finger-tips. When you do this and remove greed, you will definitely make it big investing in stocks. Know when to exit and do so immediately, as waiting a minute or a day longer can wipe out a big fraction from your investment profits which are not a good idea at all.

Investing in the stock market offers high profitability rate and promises massive amounts of income. But all these do not come without an equally high potential risk. This is why traders have come up with strategies to cope with the high risk.

The first strategy is called defensive investing. The goal here is to avoid as much risk as possible since is uses long term investing. This way you can post steady yet consistent gains. Defensive investing is more than likely to achieve its long term objectives over time. This is because it follows strict investing guidelines that seek to virtually eliminate all possible risk in the stock market.

The second strategy is called offensive investing. This is much different compared to the first strategy. The goal here is to capitalize on as many opportunities as possible that may have missed the radar of conventional thinking. Offensive investing minimizes or ignores stock market risk as it only aims to make fast gains. The risk reward ratios concept is misconstrued since your view of risk is reduced. This perception makes the rewards seem greater than they actually are.

Both of these strategies have their own loophole, that’s why it’s always safer to go back to your original stock trading plan. Come up with your own strategy and stick to your rules. You can also integrate the strong points of other strategies into your own and try to minimize or completely eliminate your strategy’s weak points. This is the best way for you to succeed in investing in the stock market.

So dealing in stock markets using productive online stock trading strategies is a must. These strategies allow traders to understand and analyse which stocks should be purchased and when they should be sold to protect their invested dollars.

There are innumerable online stock trading strategies in the market but some of them stand out from the rest. New traders are strictly advised to follow them to see the difference for themselves. Some of the basic ones include hedging, dogs of the Dow, buying on margin, and dollar cost and value averaging.

Hedging is useful for you when you aim to protect your capital. Hedging gives protection to your investment by minimising the risks involved in holding a specific stock. The risk that the stock price will come down can be set off by purchasing a put option that authorises you to sell the stock at a specific price within a certain time period. In case stock comes down, put option value will rise. If you want to hedge against market falls, selling financial futures such as the Standard & poor’s (S&P) 500 futures can be the right option.

Dog of the Dow is also one of the online stock trading strategies wherein the concept is to purchase the best-value stocks in the Dow Industrial Average by selecting stocks that have the lowest P/E ratios and the highest dividend yields.

Buying on margin is one of the risk-prone online stock trading strategies, and it involves purchasing stocks with money lent out by stock brokers. The margin amount should be restricted to around 10% of your total account.

Dollar cost and value averaging strategy includes pooling in a fixed amount of dollars regularly such as buying shares of a mutual fund every month. This strategy can be used with a broader trading strategy to secure your investment fund growth.

Indian Stock Market is very vast market where trading is not so easy we have to follow certain rules and conditions while trading in this market. Some of them trade by taking advice/tips from advisory company while rest of them trade on person views and news they get from market. Here in Stock market anything can happen in minutes, this market is very fluctuating like example :-

World stocks hit a one-month high on Wednesday 16 june and the euro hit a two-week peak high because of strong gains on Wall Street. The success of this week’s European debt auctions encouraged risk taking ability. If the one had buyed shares before last week and selled here in this week will probably have huge profit.

The BSE in this week bench mark the Sensex and by this it rose further over 111 points.

The Stock Market is totally depended on selling and buying on stocks, there are many questions and confusions arises in the minds of the people going to BUY or SELL particular stocks, the question may be like:-

Why to Buy the particular stock, i will be benifited or not by doing this?

What is the risk in getting profit? May I sell or wait for favourable time? Etc.

To avoid problems arising with such questions and getting answers you should look over certain facts and figures like:-

One should analyse the stock or company he is going to invest on regarding the financial situations of the company. This can also include comparing the price, financial activity, stability, Market value, Demand etc. of particular company with other companies.

If the condition here is for BUYING, One should always buy any stocks of a company by its Fundamental analysis, this type of analysis shows “Value investing” , “Growth of Stocks” , “Give preference to Dividend Stocks”

Rather if we talk about SELLING stocks then also fundamental analysis is worthfull, like

Sell when you have a recent or current “News Flash” , “Price of Stock is overevaluated”.

Apart from all the questions and answers there is need to follow some rules and strategies for profitable trading in Stock Market, which are illustrated as follow:-

Rules one should follow while Trading:-

1. Divide your capital into 10 equal risk parts.
2. In a single trade always try not to invest 10% of your Capital.

3. Never do over trading.

4. to trade efficiently never average your losses.

5. No guessing on Tops and Bottoms always trade on confermed News.

6. Avoid getting in wrong and out wrong; or getting in right and out wrong. This is making a double mistake.

7. Never take lead you may loose heavily.

8. Don’t follow tips only.

9. Risk should be distributed differently among different Market.

10. When you lose don’t blame it on luck.

11. Don’t trade if trend not clear

12. Never limit your orders. Trade at the markets

13. Only trade active markets.

14. Bear markets have no support and bull markets have no resistance.

15. Never buy a stock to get dividend.

16. Avoid partnership in trading accounts.

17. Buy on rumor and sell on news.

18. Never let profit turn into loss.

19. Decrease your trading after a series of successful trades.

20. Never buy a stock just because it has fallen from a great high, nor sell a stock because it is high priced.

Strategies one should follow while trading:-

1. Always develop a winning Strategy in market while trading, never ever try to earn profit instantly and all together in one turn always have patience because small profits daily can give large anual return.

2. Winning strategy is a strategy with the lowest risk/return ratio.

3. Always be sure that expected return is larger than the transaction cost (bid-ask spread + brokerage commissions).

4. Never fear losses, be brave enough and always keep in mind that stock market is the place where one looses and another gains.
